                  Indian railways which comprise the chief mode of organized transportation system is the nation’s single largest undertaking with a route length of over 63 thousand kilometers spread over 6853 railway stations. Indian Railways is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railway.Making a small beginning in April 1853 when the first ever railway train in India commenced its journey from Mumbai to thane, a stretch of only 34 kilometers, Indian railways emerged to be Asia’s largest and the world’s second largest railway system under a single management.
                  As on march 31, 2011 the Indian railway had a vast network of 7083 stations spread over a route length of 64024 kilometers.As on march 31, 2011 about 23 percent of the route kilometer, 34 percent of running track kilometer and 34 percent of total track kilometer is electrified, this is the second biggest electrified system in the system, the first being commonwealth of Independent states. As of January 2014, it transported over 30 million passengers daily (over 10 billion on an annual basis). In 2011, IR carried over 8,900 million passengers annually or more than 24 million passengers daily (roughly half of which were suburban passengers) and 2.8 million tons of freight daily.
                Indian Railways is the world's ninth largest commercial or utility employer, by number of employees, with over 1.4 million employees.
The Indian railway system is now divided into 17 zones. Each zone is headed by a general manager, who is responsible for the railway board for all the zonal affairs such as operation and maintenance of zonal railways and the financial matters pertaining there to.

                      Indian Railway network is known to be the largest network in the world. Government releases many projects to provide one job opportunities to make one’s career in the field of Railways. The Indian railways are broadly divided and sub-divided into zones, divisions and departments, each controlling a particular function .Indian Railways is divided into 17 Zones, each of these zones is further divided in divisions with a total of 68 Divisions. . Every division has a certain number of technical and non-technical departments, which form the base structure on which the railways function. Technical departments include civil, technical and mechanical engineering, signalling and telecom, and several others dealing with similar disciplines, while the non-technical departments include general services such as accounts, personnel management, Railway protection Force (RPF) or security and traffic services, among others. Each department has staff at various levels. The highest are the Group A officers, while the lowest in rank are the Group D staff members.
 Each zone is headed by a General Manager (GM). Similarly, Each division is also headed by a separate Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). Going down in the hierarchy, there are divisional officers belonging to various departments such as engineering, electrical, mechanical, accounts, personnel etc. These officers report to the DRM that contacts the Railway ministry directly. Further, there are station masters that control the flow of train traffic through their specific stations.

The officers in Indian railways are divided in Four Grades - Grade - A, Grade - B, Grade - C and Grade - D Officers.

Group A

Grade A officers are the highest level officers in Indian railways. Recruitment in Grade A is done through Civil Services Examination and Combined Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

Civil Service Examination

Through Civil Services exam, Group 'A' personnel are recruited for Following services :-

Combined Engineering Service

Through Combined Engineering Services Exam, Group 'A' personnel are recruited for Following services :-

UPSC SCRA Exam 

Group A officers are recruited by UPSC.Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers personnel are also recruited through UPSC Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination.

Group B

Group 'B' Officers are promoted directly from Group 'C'.

Group C

Group 'C' officers are recruited by 19 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) that operate under the control of Railway recruitment control board (RRCB).
These Railway recruitment boards are the prime recruiting agencies for zonal railways, production units etc. They ask for applications for various Group 'C' vacancies through Technical and Non-Technical cadre exams.
Group 'C' technical services include Civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, signal and telecommunication etc.Non -technical services include, Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Train Clerks, etc.

  • Technical Cadre Examination

Indian Railway technical cadre exam is conducted by various RRBs (Railway Recruitment Boards) to recruit Group 'C' officers in technical categories at divisional level including Civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, signal and telecommunication etc.
The tests are designed according to the educational standards required for the post. There are no Interviews in most cases, however there may be some variations in exam pattern depending upon job profiles.For some categories, written test may be followed by an Oral test (Viva) and for others a skill test or psychological test may also be conducted as required by the posts Job profile. All questions are multiple-choice objective type.
More than one written test may be conducted (Preliminary and mains exam) if the number of applicants is large.
After selection, The successful applicants are called for counselling and scrutiny of original documents for verification and a panel of names is then recommended to zonal railway / production unit, depending on the number of vacancies. The candidates will be required to pass a medical examination before appointment
 
  • Non-Technical Cadre Examination

Indian Railway Non-technical cadre exam is conducted by various Railway Recruitment Boards for recruitment of Group 'C' officers in Non-technical categories. Various non-technical job categories include Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket-Collectors, Train Clerks, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Apprentice etc.Selection process mainly consists of Written tests and may vary according to the nature of job profiles. The successful applicants have to pass a medical test to finalize the appointment.

  • RPF Sub-Inspectors / Constables Examination

RPF (Railway Protection Force) Sub-inspectors and Constables exam is conducted annually at national level by RPF Central selection board to recruit Sub-Inspectors and Constables for Executive and fire branch. The tests are held at locations under control of zonal railways. Successful candidates have to pass a medical test before finalizing appointment.

The Group D posts are filled at the divisional level. Group D
The scheme of Railway Examinations(technical/Non-technical) generally consist of three stages:

  1. Written Examination (for some of the posts Written Examination is conducted in two phases,i.e..,Preliminary and Main)
  2. Psychological Aptitude test and /or Interview
  3. Skill Test or Proficiency Test.

The first stage of Examination Scheme comprises WRITTEN TEST which consists of a composite Test Paper of Multiple Choices Objective Questions which Include three or four subjects, Reasoning, General Knowledge, Mathematics and English.For some technical posts questions are also asked from the area of specialization. Only those candidates are eligible for the admission to the second stage of the examination Scheme who secure minimum qualifying marks in the Written test.

The second stage may consist of oral test or personality test or interview and /or psychological aptitude test. The psychological aptitude test is of qualifying nature only. However, it is made compulsory for some of the technical grade posts.

For the posts of clerical cadre and stenographer, skill test or proficiency test is also organized.After clearing the first and/or second stage(s) candidates are required to appear in the Typing Test and /or stenography test.

Age and qualification Criteria

The aspirants need to be in age group of 18-27 yrs. The qualification criteria varies according to job profiles. For some categories like Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Apprentice, Assistant Station Master,Clerk Grade I, Guards, etc. the required qualification is a degree from a recognized University while for other lower categories it's merely matriculation.
